CDX Reviews by Chuck Dauphin- VOL. 598

Is It really almost July? We will replace the 6 with 7 when filling out the date on our checks or important paperwork. Yes, I guess it is. Six months down, with six months to go. CDX leads the charge into the second half of the year with somewhat of a rarity. Volume 598 is led by a newcomer who is quickly becoming one of the most talked about acts in Nashville. How good is Sam Hunt? Well, he’s good enough to win the “Jewel” of 598 with the downright infectious “Leave The Night On.” Radio was asking MCA Nashville for this song for at least two months before it was released, and with good reason. There’s not anyone like him out there. He’s not traditional, yet he’s not rock. His style is very much hook-laden, and he sells a lyric like nobody’s business. Look for this to be the first of many for Hunt! Other great tracks on 598 include…..

Home” / Dolly Parton – After five decades in Nashville, Dolly Parton still has that competitive fire and spirit to her. She sounds as hungry and involved in the lyrics of this one as ever. A reason she is – and will always be – one of the best!

We’ll Come Back Around” / Craig Morgan – It’s hard to believe, but it’s been almost a decade and a half since Craig released his first record. Since then, he has always came up with some great material, but the one-two punch of “Wake Up Lovin’ You” and this strong single about a love standing the test of time is his best back-to-back showing in a long time!

And, our “Hidden Gem” of 598 belongs to another CDX rarity – a Nashville hometown girl. Taria grew up going to Music City hotspots like the Nashville Palace and the Ernest Tubb Midnight Jamboree. She possesses a dynamic range a la Faith Hill, and shows it off on her soaring debut single “Who’s Crying Now.” If you remember Nikki Nelson, who never got the credit she deserved as lead singer of Highway 101, she also brings her to mind – a compliment of the deepest respect! She’s one to watch!

Well, before August gets here…..I am going to do something fun…..Have a good July 4 everyone!
